Establishment of Recycling Society
The preservation of the world's resource base is addressed in ISO 26000, GRI Standard 2021, and the SDGs, and companies are urged to reduce the use of raw materials and reuse parts. In addition, there are concerns that water resources may become scarce worldwide in the future, and it is becoming increasingly important for companies to engage in activities for the effective use of water resources. At JTEKT, we are advancing innovations in production technology, promoting initiatives such as recycling of resource, reducing and recycling of waste, saving and reusing water and so on, through the reduction of material usage, or improvements and ingenuity in production sites.

Activity Report
Waste Reduction <Production>
Initiatives for waste generated in large quantities
JTEKT is working to reduce the weight of waste generated (sludge, waste liquid), while reducing the generation of waste itself by making it into valuable materials (abrasive powder, waste plastics) and extending its service life (waste casting sand, waste liquid).

Toward higher material recycling rates
At JTEKT, iron, aluminum, and other metals from the by-products generated during production are recovered as valuable materials for material recycling.
On the other hand, thermal recovery of plastics has been promoted by the heat generated during incineration, or by generating electricity from that heat. In order to further reduce environmental impacts and make effective use of resources, JTEKT also promoted material recycling for plastics in FY2024, with the goal of increasing the material recycling rate of plastics to 35% by 2025.

Expansion of valuable sales of plastics
By sorting plastics that had been discarded as waste, it became possible to sell them as resources. In addition, we were able to reduce CO2 emissions during the transportation of waste by using existing logistics services to collect saleable plastics beyond the boundaries of plants. We plan to expand this initiative to other plants in FY2025.
Waste reduction<Logistics>
Reduction of packaging materials
In order to promote reduction of wooden packaging materials, we expanded the change from wooden pallets to resin pallets, and from wooden boxes to reinforced cardboard boxes.
Also, to promote reduction of paper packaging materials, by increasing the use of returnable packaging materials for export, transitioning from disposable cardboard boxes to returnable plastic cases, reviewing excessive packaging, and switching to cardboard boxes tailored to product sizes, we implemented an expansion of initiatives to reduce the amount of cushioning material used.
Since we have already achieved the targets for FY2025, we will continue to promote further reduction initiatives.
Reduction of one-way plastic packaging materials
In order to promote the reduction of disposable plastic packaging materials, we implemented reductions by reviewing the packaging specifications (such as Styrofoam and vinyl sheets).Since we have already achieved the targets for FY2025, we will continue to promote further reduction initiatives.
Effective utilization of resources <Reduction of water consumption>
Promoting the effective utilization of water
JTEKT is working to reduce water usage, an important resource, by reducing waste and recycling water within the company. In FY2024, we aimed for an improvement of over 6.0% compared with FY2018, focusing on leak prevention measures to reduce usage.
Water risk assessment
In addition to effectively using water resources by improving the water consumption base unit, JTEKT has been assessing water risks at each business site using Aqueduct* since 2017.
In the future, we will make efforts to reduce water consumption in accordance with the results of our water risk assessment, including future projections, and the water consumption and water dependency of each business site, in order to make effective use of water resources.
*Aqueduct
A database operated by the World Resources Institute (WRI) that provides world maps and information showing water risks such as physical water stress, water quality, regulatory risk concerning water resources, and reputational risk.

* Target companies for data collection : Global environmental management companies (JTEKT JAPAN 13 sites, 16 domestic group companies, 31 overseas group companies)
Identification of water risk areas
Using Aqueduct, we assess water stress factors that directly affect our business and classify locations with a 'high' risk rating as water-stressed areas. Floods, droughts, regulatory and reputational factors, and water stress factors in 2030 are also considered as future water risks.
As a result of periodic water risk assessments, among all JTEKT Group production sites, India and Mexico were rated as regions having high water stress.
Initiatives and situation of water stress regions
In India, which is a water-stressed region, water quality is poor, so they have introduced reverse osmosis membrane (RO membrane) equipment to improve water quality before supplying it to the production process. Also in Mexico, rainwater storage tanks are installed for outdoor uses such as washing and irrigation, reducing the amount of water taken from other sources.
The trend of water usage in water-stressed areas is shown in the graph below.
In FY2024, water consumption in stressed areas was 164km3 in India and 22km3 in Mexico. For these regions, special targets for water usage have been set, and measures such as water recycling and coolant reuse are being promoted.
Various reduction activities are being carried out in the India region, but the basic unit has increased. This is thought to be due to the average temperature in 2024 being higher than the normal value. In the Mexico region, although usage has increased as in the previous year, the basic unit has slightly decreased, showing the effect of reduction activities.
Examples of initiatives in water-stressed regions (India)
Plant : JIN
Initiatives to reduce water usage through the reuse of wastewater and the recharge of groundwater.
In India, water shortages are a problem in many regions due to the expansion of the dry season caused by climate change, population growth, and urbanization. JTEKT India also faces various water issues, such as declining groundwater levels, and is working to "reduce water consumption", "reuse water", and "recycle wastewater" in order to resolve these issues. Water used in corporate activities is supplied from groundwater and is used for hygiene purposes such as hand washing and toilet flushing, as well as for plant use after demineralization.
At JIN, they have reduced water consumption by reviewing our wastewater treatment methods and reusing treated water for toilet flushing and plant water.
They also renovated rainwater storage ponds to store rainwater and recharge groundwater. As the result, the groundwater level has increased by about 2 meters compared to before. We will continue to explore further ideas and promote them to make society better.
