Environmental Management
In September 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted at the UN Summit. Of the 17 goals aimed to be achieved by 2030, many are related to the environment. Companies' business activities have various impacts on the global environment. Companies are required not only to comply with the environmental regulations of their respective countries, but also to voluntarily and proactively set targets and policies and promote initiatives for global environmental conservation throughout their business activities. JTEKT regards the environment as one of the most important management issues for the sustainable development of the Earth, and is promoting environmental initiatives.

Promotion structure
JTEKT has established a structure to promote environmental management centered on the "JTEKT Environmental Committee", which is chaired by the president. The "JTEKT Environmental Committee" meets twice a year to set target values based on company policy, as well as to deliberate and determine measures and manage progress. The results of deliberations by the committee shall be reported to the "Sustainability Council", attended by all directors including outside directors, and subject to its oversight, depending on the content, and when budgetary measures are required for countermeasures, they are brought up for discussion to the the Senior Executive Officer Meeting or the Board of Directors, and following discussion by management, they are reflected in management strategies.
In addition, under the "JTEKT Environmental Committee", the specialized environmental subcommittees have been established to examine and evaluate effective measures against climate change, including reductions in Scope 3 emissions, in respective areas such as energy savings, resource circulation, production technology innovation, energy infrastructure, logistics, technology and research, and the value chain.
As for the system at plant level, each plant has Plant Environmental Conservation Committee chaired by the plant manager, which meets at least once every two months, and monitors CO2 emissions, waste emissions, water consumption, etc.
JTEKT also has established the Global JTEKT Group Environmental Coordinating Committee to implement groupwide environmental initiatives, which reviews initiatives by individual domestic and overseas Group companies, discusses annual action plans, and exchanges information and opinions relating to environmental management. In addition, in 2021, JTEKT established the Carbon Neutral Strategy Dept. in response to the increasing demands for action against climate change.
Furthermore, in light of the growing importance of the "Circular Economy" toward the realization of a sustainable society, the organization's name has been revised to "Carbon Neutrality& Circular Economy Strategy Dept." since 2025.These efforts are aimed at further strengthening cooperation among business divisions, facilitating communication and accelerating implementation of measures.

JTEKT Group Environmental Coordinating Committee in Japan
JTEKT's 16 domestic group companies share targets and promote group-wide activities to reduce CO2 emissions, reduce waste, and prevent environmental abnormalities. Coordinating Committee meetings for the group companies are held three times a year. At the meeting in April 2024, the environmental officers of domestic group companies gathered to review each company's FY2023 environmental activities and deliberated initiative plans for FY2024. In July 2024 and January 2025, the meetings were held with the participation of the person responsible for environment from each company to discuss the results of their activities and future initiatives and to exchange opinions about the next Environmental Action Plan 2025, initiatives for achieving carbon neutrality, and improvement of each company's environmental management level.
Initiatives to Reduce CO2 Emissions
In FY2023, we established the Domestic Group 6 -Company-Meeting with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions. Six companies, which account for 73% of the CO2 emissions of all JTEKT Group companies in Japan (FY2024 results), participate in this 6-company-meetings and work together with JTEKT to reduce and eliminate air leakage.
In FY2024, we collected examples of CO2 reduction initiatives from domestic group companies in addition to those 6 companies and shared them together with JTEKT's examples within the group. The shared examples will be reflected into the improvement plans of each company from FY2025 onward, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions.
Overseas JTEKT Group Environmental Coordinating Committee
Global Safety & Environment Conference
In June 2024, JTEKT held a web meeting with regional headquarters (North America, Europe, ASEAN, China, India, South America), to confirm our Medium-Term Management Plan in the environmental field, our initiative policies, and the status of our initiatives to achieve the total CO2 emissions target by 2030. And thus, we mutually confirmed that the JTEKT Group will unite to improve environmental performance and work together to achieve the "Environmental Action Plan 2025", which was formulated to realize the Environmental Challenge 2050.
Overseas Regional Environmental Meeting
Since April 2023, we have held regional meetings 3 times a year with each regional headquarters company to periodically review KPIs, identify issues, and confirm matters to be developed and shared with environmental personnel.
And the regional headquarters gathered regional business entities to hold remote regional environmental meetings.
In December 2024, the Safety and Environment Subcommittee was held in China, and in January 2025, and the Safety and Health Environment Meeting was held in the United States. The meetings are attended by the safety and environment manager of each region and regional corporation, and through reports about the environmental activities and issues of each local subsidiary and disclosure and sharing of improvement cases and JTEKT's initiatives, we endeavore to raise mutual awareness of environmental issues among the business entities.
Environmental accident prevention activities
To prevent environmental incidents, JTEKT prepares an" Environment Risk Map" covering major management points and is utilizing this in our daily inspections, etc. The JTEKT Group companies in Japan are also striving to prevent environmental accidents through daily management based on the Environmental Risk Map.n order to comply with environmental laws, ordinances, and agreed values, we have set voluntary standards * that are stricter than those set by each regulation, and are prepared for unexpected situations.
*JTEKT's voluntary criteria for the discharge of effluent and release into the atmosphere is set at 80% of the legal regulatory values.
Legal compliance with environmental legislation
- In FY2024, No environmental abnomalities occurred at JTEKT. 2 cases occurred at the domestic group, but countermeasures have been completed.
- There were no fines or charges related to Environmental accidents or complaints, nor were there any lawsuits related to the environment.
In order to collect and share the information on even less serious incidents than environmental near-misses, we have established standards for quasi-environmental near-misses, gathered information, and worked to prevent similar incidents from occurring.

Environmental patrol by plant managers
As part of our initiatives for Environment Month every June, plant managers of all plants conduct environmental patrols.
In FY2024, the patrols were carried out with a focus on grasping and improving the plants' environmental risks.

Emergency drills
JTEKT performs regular emergency drills to prepare for the occurrence of various environmental incidents. As an example of what was done in 2024, at the Toyohashi Plant, a drill was conducted to simulate a leak caused by an overturned plastic tank near an oil warehouse.
Wastewater treatment plant management level improvement WG
A working group was newly established in FY2022 to improve management levels. In 2024, it was held in October, gathered concerns and issues from the operators at each business site, and discussed and shared solutions.
Environmental audits
Internal audits
JTEKT conducts internal audits annually using the audit check sheet to make sure of the operational status of our environmental management system and compliance with legislation. In FY2024, in order to improve the competence of internal auditors, we reviewed the audit check sheet, selected high-priority contents, and conducted focused audits. With regard to the law, we performed pre-inspections and were able to do proper auditing. JTEKT also regularly holds new auditor training sessions that are extended to our domestic group companies.
External audits
In April 2024, JTEKT underwent an ISO14001 renewal surveillance audit. The result was that there was zero case of non-conformity, and confirmed that our environmental management system was consistent with the standard requirements and were effectively implemented.
In regards to the 5 cases identified as having room for improvement, all cases have been corrected.
In the JTEKT Group, all 16 domestic companies and 31 overseas companies have been certified.
Based on the ISO14001 standard, JTEKT will contribute to a sustainable society by promoting environmental management and improving environmental performance.
Environmental education
Environmental awareness education
During Environment Month in June 2024, an environmental awareness training was provided for all employees through e-learning and 7,259 people participated. In the environmental seminar, we had a lecture on the theme "Design in the Age of Circular Economy".
Education for affiliated companies
JTEKT aims to achieve carbon neutrality for the entire Scope3, including its suppliers, by 2050. In order to promote the activities of our suppliers, we newly launched a CN subcommittee in FY2024 and promoted mutual learning on energy-saving initiatives through visits to JTEKT's CN Dojo and exchanges of opinions through mutual visits between suppliers.

Main activities
Community gathering
All JTEKT plants regularly invite local residents and government members for community discussions. This is an opportunity to introduce JTEKT's environmental initiatives, have participants take a plant tour and exchange opinions in order to facilitate better communication with the local community.
Partnerships with suppliers
In order to share environmental initiatives with everyone in the supply chain, JTEKT has been conducting surveys on the status of suppliers' environmental management systems, environmental performance targets and results, as well as the status of each company's understanding of water risks, through questionnaires since FY2018, and in FY2023, we added a survey on recycling of waste materials such as iron, aluminum and plastic. Also, in FY2024, we created a simple calculation aid tool that can be used to calculate Scope 3 Cat1 for suppliers, and conducted questionnaires that benefit suppliers as well.
<Main survey items in the environmental questionnaire>
- CO2 emissions
- Initiatives towards achieving carbon neutrality
(Promotion system, reduction targets, introduction status of renewable energy, etc.) - Waste reduction status
- Water consumption reduction status
Also, we have established the "JTEKT Environmental Award System" for suppliers who achieved excellent environmental performance, to encourage suppliers to make further improvements.
In FY2024, we honored Miyake Co. Ltd., HEKIKAI KOKI Co.Ltd., and SHINKO KOGYO CO., LTD. for their outstanding initiatives.
Initiatives with local organizations
JTEKT has been collaborating with the Nishimikawa Bird Club to develop nesting sites for little terns on the premises of the Tadomisaki Plant since 2015. Receiving advice on site maintenance, ways to attract little terns, and measures to protect chicks from birds of prey, we also host bird watching events every spring.
Besides, since 2022, we have been collaborating with the Toyota City Oiden Sanson Center to engage in activities with the local community, such as environmental education through nature observation in the forests along the Yahagi River, which is the water source for JTEKT's four plants, and maintenance of bamboo groves.
FY2024 Environmental impact flow
JTEKT quantitatively grasps its resource and energy input (INPUT) and environmental emissions (OUTPUT). To minimize the impact of global warming associated with our business activities, we are working on reducing energy consumption, focusing on processes that use a large amount of energy, such as casting, forging, heat treatment and machining.
Resource and energy inputs and emissions of environmentally hazardous substances
- *1. GJ: Giga-joule (heat quantity unit), G=109
- *2. Heavy oil A: Among the three classes (A, B, C) of heavy oil, heavy oil A is the closest to kerosene and is used as fuel for boilers or heating
- *3. PRTR Law: "PRTR" is an abbreviation for Pollutant Release and Transfer Register, which is a system created by the government for reporting the amount of chemical substances released or transferred
- *4. COD : Chemical Oxygen Demand (water quality index)
