Abstract In this paper, we discuss rack swing torque of rack and pinion steering gears considering friction during rack and pinion gear meshing without backlash and present a theory able to estimate rack swing torque based on consideration of rack and pinion gear meshing normal force, frictional force between tooth surfaces, spring force, frictional force from the rack guide, etc. In addition, based on this theory, we tested rack and pinion gear parameters designed to minimize rack swing torque. The experimental results show that the rack swing angle is improved compared with that of the current product and consequently that the proposed theory for estimating rack swing torque is effective.
