Abstract In order to improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles equipped with electric power steering (EPS), it is necessary to grasp and reduce average EPS energy consumption during vehicle operation. Conventionally, the only way to know EPS energy consumption during vehicle operation has been to take measurements during operation, but this requires many development man-hours. Now, by constructing a general vehicle operation database, improving the method of estimating rack force during low-speed driving, and utilizing the electric power relationship between battery input power and rack output force, we have developed a technique that allows us to estimate energy consumption accurately and in a short period of time without on-vehicle measurements.
