Abstract New use cases for cockpits have arisen in autonomous driving and battery electric vehicle (BEV) applications. We created a functional prototype of a stowable steering column with a 330 mm stroke and we verified supporting rigidity in manual driving and comfort by stowing. In the bench verification for column rigidity, displacement under load was less than half of the limit of the target for the current column and the resonance frequency was higher than current models. From these results, it was confirmed that the long stroke and the high rigidity are compatible.
