Abstract In the field of automotive gear reduction systems, there is a growing demand for downsizing. One effective machining method for achieving downsizing is gear skiving. In this study, a simulation program that can calculate the cutting state of each part of the cutting edge during gear skiving has been developed for the selection of appropriate tool parameters and processing conditions. Using this simulation program, it was found that the cutting edge experienced greater change in rake angle than the left and right cutting faces and the cutting edge was most susceptible to wear due to the long cutting depth and processing time, the calculated cutting state agreed well with qualitative assessment of the actual cutting edge wear state.
