| Abstract | Truing of grinding wheel is necessary in the grinding process because deterioration of the surface condition of the grinding wheels decreases the quality of grinding processes. To prevent the outflow of defective products, the truing interval for the grinding wheel is set with a margin, which causes increased production downtime and wasteful use of grinding wheels, resulting in lower productivity and higher tool costs. Evaluation of workpiece surface conditions in grinding processes is mainly done by skilled operators and is time-consuming since the work is performed outside of the grinding machine. We have developed a Workpiece Surface Condition Monitoring System, which rapidly monitors workpiece surface conditions on-machine by adding an acceleration sensor to the sizing device mounted on the grinding machine. This system has been confirmed to have the same accuracy as an off-machine measuring device, reduces evaluation time by performing measurement on-machine and allows for quantitative evaluation without relying on skilled operators. In addition, it contributes to productivity improvement by optimizing the truing interval based on measurement results, and to tool cost reduction by extending the life of grinding wheels. |
