Abstract For the mass production of ball screws used in rack-parallel-type electric power steering systems, a new thread rolling machine was developed to consolidate the three process – turning, grinding, and super finishing – into a single process – rolling. This machine offers improved operability and ease of maintenance through an inclined structured slide table equipped with a thread rolling die. In addition, optimization of the die geometry, quantification of process error factors, and error-correction processing improved shape accuracies and enabled integration of this into the mass production line. This report presents characteristics and features the developed thread rolling machine.
