Abstract Bearings for high-speed rotating machine tool spindles are typically lubricated with oil-air systems. However, these systems continuously consume air during operation, leading to increased energy usage. To solve this issue, JTEKT developed a new bearing series HIGHABILY-JFAST that expands the high-speed rotation area of grease lubrication without consuming air, saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions. The design of the cage shape and material for grease lubrication has been optimized, resulting in a reduction of bearing temperature rises by approximately 30% for angular contact ball bearings and by approximately 50% for cylindrical roller bearings. The lifespan of the grease has also been improved by approximately 20% for angular contact ball bearings and by approximately 50% for cylindrical roller bearings.
